Movie Recommendation

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Last night, I had the pleasure and privilege of attending an advance screening in Berkeley of a movie you should go and see: Persepolis.

Since I read both books last year, I’ve been recommending them to all non-Iranians I know. Although I’m linking to Amazon to recommend the boxed set, I highly suggest you get them wherever you can find them.

I like the story because it’s a great mix of humor and pathos but also because it compacts the last (fascinating) three decades of history of Iran in under two hours in the case of the movie or less than a pair of days in the case of the print versions.

I think the author does a great job of taking the story from print to the big screen. That having been said, I do prefer the print version because I think the movie races through historical events the print version affords time to digest.

Hyperlinks and Status in Yahoo IM

Just a quick tip to share (because I had a rough time finding and validating it.)

You can display a hyperlink next to your name as your status in Yahoo! Messenger. When you click on “New Status Message,” use the following format:

Some text http://www.somelink.com

Here’s the thing that threw me for a loop, at least with version 8.1: you won’t see a hyperlink next to your name but your contacts will.

Hypernova’s in town

I hadn’t heard of them before yesterday and I probably won’t be going to see them.

However, as I looked around for info on them, I found that no one refers to them as the “Ayatollah[s] of Rockandrollah!” Seems like a perfectly good tag line given their origin.

There you go, kids, giving you that one for free.

UPDATE: I did go to see them. They were OK as far as rock bands go but the thing is, they weren’t just any old rock band, they were a rock band from Iran. As I looked around, I took for granted that we (the collective “we” of the audience) were free to gather in an open space and listen to music, an environment the band is unlikely to have in Tehran.

This definitely requires some further analysis: the chord changes of “The Joker” and the lyrics of “Take the Money and Run”

Take the Joker and Run

(I think you need the Yahoo! Music Engine installed for this to work.)
